Physical Exams for Men and Athletes

To live a long and healthy life we recommend you schedule annual physical exams, which are useful in detecting illnesses in their early stages or preventing them altogether. At First California Physician Partners California Central Coast, our primary care clinic offers men’s health exams and physical assessments that are designed to prevent and treat any health problems you might be experiencing. With male physicals and exams you are taking a proactive approach to keeping yourself healthy.

While it isn’t uncommon for athletes, children, and young adults to need sports or school physicals, annual physical examinations (including blood work and laboratory tests) actually become more important as you get older. The primary care physicians at our clinic encourage you to schedule your men’s health exam with us to ensure you are in your best health or learn what you need to do to start heading in that direction.

Complete Physical Assessments for Men

When you come to visit our primary care physician, he or she will sit down and discuss your health history with you. This includes asking you about your lifestyle behaviors, such as smoking, excessive alcohol use, sexual health, diet, and exercise routines. This is also when our staff will check on your vaccination and immunization status and update your personal and family medical history.

Once this introductory step is complete, your physical exam will begin. This is when our physician checks on your vital signs, including your blood pressure, respiration rate, heart rate, and body temperature. This exam is followed up with heart, lung, general appearance, neck, head, and abdominal area exams as well as neurological and dermatological tests. There are also a handful of male-centric assessments that are performed during a men’s health exam, including:

Man Sitting

  • Testicular Exam – An exam to check each testicle for lumps, tenderness, or changes in size. It allows us to ensure there are no signs of testicular cancer.
  • Hernia Exam – An exam to check for any weaknesses in the abdominal wall between the intestines and the scrotum.
  • Prostate Exam – An exam that allows our physician to check the size of the prostate as well as any suspicious areas.
  • Penis Exam – An exam used when there is a sign of a sexually transmitted infection, including warts or ulcers.

The Importance of School and Sports Physicals

Students and athletes should know their health conditions before starting classes or a sport to ensure that they are healthy enough to participate in these activities. In the case of a sports physical exam, our physicians take the time to ensure that you or your school-aged athletes are healthy enough to perform the particular sport you are participating in.

It is very rare that a student or athlete has an illness or condition that might make it necessary to limit their activity. However, the results can be devastating for the unlucky few who go on to participate in physical activities when they are not medically cleared to do so. Make sure you stop by our clinic for a physical examination to ensure you can have safe fun.
